Hey all.
I'm starting up a tabletop campaign, high level (borderline epic), that will involve the characters travelling to many different worlds (settings, via spelljammer) in search of an artifact. The artifact is the last relic of a now lost/killed/descended deity.
I have in mind the final resting place and society in which this artifact sits, but this should be a fairly lengthy campaign, spanning many civilisations which have the common undercurrent of a 'lost' or dead deity. (A dungeon crawl hook or 3 would be awesome too!)
So.. my fellow dms.. give me some ideas for these civilisations! _________________ It's time to try defying gravity |

could always use the spell weavers.
A race of 6 armed creatures that mainly used Psionics, but also used magic, but on a grander scale then mortals. They grew so powerful they actually destroyed their way of life. A few survived, but the knowledge of what they were and their great power was lost in huge explosions. Most relics were destroyed, though some survived. How to activate said relics is lost to the ages however.
You can find info in the old dragon Mags |

I am not sure that it is the same race that Syllander is referencing but a creature named 'spell weaver' is also in the Monster Manual II on page 187. _________________ "The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic." - Joseph Stalin |

Off the top of my head, how about:
A world/civilization which was technologically advanced, but which has collapsed into anarchy and fallen back to a feudal order, sort of like the movie Doomsday. It gives you the opportunity to confront the PCs with new technologies with which the PCs are unfamiliar (although of course the players are).
A world which has just survived (barely) a deadly plague or other natural disaster which has effectively depopulated the world. If memory serves, the bubonic plague killed about 1/3 of Europe's population in its day. What would it be like in a world where a plague has killed 90% of the population?
A world/civilization in which all the gods have died off, and in which their role has been taken over by powerful wizards. Having the PC clerics visit such a place and bring their deities with them could have huge implications. Talk about a huge untapped reserve of power...
A world/civilization in which there are no people, and animals (or one or two particular species of animals) have gained intelligence.
A very backward world, in which civilization hasn't yet been invented, sort of a caveman/ice age situation. _________________ The only thing worse than dying young is dying young with money in your pocket. |

Similar to this idea, A place where Lycanthrope is the normal human. Their god, now dead, is the one who granted the power of lycanthropy, and with him gone the power is becoming unstable, natural lycanthropes becoming cursed lycanthropes(unable to control shift, barely able to control their actions while shifted). The civilization is falling apart becouse of this. A few druids are trying to find a cure for the populace, but they need to gather all the items of power left by their dead god to tap into the small bit of power left by him. (that gives an adventure hook) |
